House of Parliament

The largest building in the country, the permanent site of the national assembly. Parliament sits on the Danube embankment with its entrance looking out over Kossuth Square. The neo-Gothic building is the work of architect Imre Steindl, and was constructed between 1884-1904. It has 691 rooms, is 268 m long and its cupola rises 96 m into the air. The staircase is embellished with frescos by Károly Lotz and sculptures by György Kiss. The most important work of art in the Parliament is the painting by Mihály Munkácsy “The Conquest”.
Since 2000 the Hungarian coronation regalia is exhibit here: St.Stephan’s Crown, the scepter, orb and Renaissance sword.

Fishermen’s Bastion

The Fishermen’s Bastion was constructed between 1895-1902. It is named after the fishermen’s guild because according to customs in the middle ages this guild was in charge of defending this part of the castle wall. It is one of the most beloved sights of the Buda Castle District.

The Heroes’ Square

The Heroes’ square is one of the most visited sights of the Hungarian capital, it is situated in front of the City Park, at the end of the Andrássy Avenue, one of the most important streets of Budapest, a World Heritage site.  The monument consists of two semi-circles on the top of which the symbols of War and Peace, Work and Wellfare, Knowledge and Glory can be seen. In the middle of Heroes’ square stands a 36 metres high corinthian column with the statue of Archangel Gabriel on the top, the symbol of the Roman Catholic religion.

The Hungarian National Gallery

The Hungarian National Gallery is the largest public collection documenting and presenting the rise and development of the fine arts in Hungary. It has operated as an independent institution since 1957. The HNG moved to its present location, the former Royal Palace of Buda, in 1975.

The Hungarian National Museum

Designed by Mihály Pollack, and founded by Count Ferenc Széchenyi in 1802, the Hungarian National Museum has a history dating back to more than two centuries. During the Revolutionary Wars of 1848-49, it went from significant to iconic when Sándor Petőfi, a legendary Hungarian poet, read both the 12 points of the Revolutionaries (a list of demands written by the Revolution’s leaders) and his passion-igniting poem, Nemzeti dal (The National Song), atop the museum’s staircase. During the warmer months, this mile-long staircase and the garden surrounding the museum is crowded with sunbathing, coffee-sipping, lunch-munching, lazing students of nearby ELTE (Eötvös Loránd University). As for the content, the museum is divided into seven units according to the noteworthy eras of Hungarian history.

The House of Hungarian Art Nouveau – the Magyar Szecesszió Háza

One of the hidden treasures of Secessionist architecture in Budapest, the House of Hungarian Art Nouveau features a unique permanent exhibition of the fine world of Art Nouveau, giving an insight into the atmosphere of middle-class life in Budapest in the ”happy pre-war times”.

Budapest Zoo

Opened to the general public on 9 August 1866 the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden is one of the oldest zoological gardens in the world. Not only does it offer visitors an opportunity to see more than a thousand animal species, it also contains art nouveau buildings designed by Kornél Neuschloss and Károly Kós.
