Gellért Thermal bath is the art nouveau, historical thermal bath of Budapest since 1918. It offers both health and wellness services, such as aroma and thermal massages, levander treatment, spa pedicure and private bathing. Records dating back to the 15th century speak of „wondrous” waters rising on the site of the bath. Later it became the Turks’ favourite bathing spot since the water here was more abundant and hotter tha in other Buda baths. In the 17th century it was called Muddy Bath because of fine silt deposits on the bottom of the pools. The Art Nouveau-style Gellért Medicinal Bath and Hotel opened in 1918 and quickly became the favourite of people from all over the world. The wave pool was inaugurated in 1927 and the jacuzzi in 1934. During a renovation some years ago the sitting pool in the baths, the open-air sitting pool and the padding pool were equipped with the latest filtration and circulation system. It has a section providing full medical spa services and an inhalatorium.

The construction of this Bath was begun by Arslan, the Pasha of Buda in 1565 and was completed by his successor, Sokoli Mustafa. The Király Thermal Bath had no direct hot water base, nor has it any today. The Turks built the Bath far from the springs to ensure the opportunity for bathing even in the case of an eventual siege, within the walls of the castle. Its water was supplied at that time, and is being supplied now, from the surroundings of the current Lukács Bath. Following the reoccupation of Buda, the Bath was acquired in 1796 by the König family. They rebuilt it to its current form, combining the old with the new, and preserving its monumental character, found even in the name of the Bath. Stemming from the name of the family, it translates from Hungarian (Király=King=König). In World War II, the Bath was damaged. Its complete renovation was accomplished in 1950 and the present renewal will be finished in 2020.

In the bath you can enjoy the steam chamber, the hot air chanber and the wellness jacuzzi in the courtyard, in addition there are 4 thermal baths: three thermal pools, one immersion pool as well, and one wooden hot tub.

The water composition: hot spring water with calcium, magnesium, hydrogen-carbonate and sulphate, also containing sodium and with a substantial content of fluoride ions.

The centerpiece of the bath today, the Turkish bath, was built during the 16th century in the period of the Turkish occupation. Below the 10 m diameter dome, sustained by 8 pillars, there is an octagonal pool. The swimming pool, operating as a therapeutic swimming facility and with a sauna, was built in 1896. The thermal bath has been visited from 1936 o­n exclusively by men.

In its drinking hall, the water of the springs Hungária, Attila and Juventus can be consumed for the purposes of a drinking cure.

Radio-active hot spring water with calcium-magnesium-hydrogen-carbonate also containing sodium and sulphate and with a significant content of fluoride ion.
