Day 1

Arrival to Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport OR if you are already arrived to Budapest, breakfast at your hotel.

In the morning hours departure from Budapest with your local guide and your private transfer to the Őrség. This wonderful landscape coloured with forests and groves is located in the southwestern corner of Vas County, where the Magyars who occupied the land installed watchposts to defend the western gate. This is where the region got the name Őrség, meaning ‘watchpost’. In addition to natural values, the land carries outstanding ethnologic and cultural history values, that are worth discovering.

The first stop will be in Szalafő, the most authentic settlement in the region, the home of the Pityerszer Őrség Folk Monument Ensemble – an open-air ethnographic museum where you can see the typical buildings of the region in their original locations and with their original interior, while the kids can have fun at various craft shops and in play barns. The guests will have free time to try some traditional snacks here on their own. The guests proceed towards the Balogh Family’s place, where they get some information about how they prepare the oil from different kind of seeds and taste some delicious oil. The family has a Strudel house as well, so the guests can have some sweet experiences as well.

In the afternoon the guests continue the day in Őriszentpéter. The main sight here is the Romanesque memorial church, built around 1230, then expanded in the 14th-15th century in Gothic style and converted into a fortress about 1550. The mediaeval church was decorated with frescoes, not only inside, but also outside. In the 17th century, quotations from the Bible were painted on the wall in the nave and the sanctuary, and these can still be seen today.

In the end of the day the guests check in to their accommodation.

For the evening the guests are invited to take part on a culinary experience at a local traditional restaurant where they can try the local specialities.

Day 2 

Breakfast at your pension.

After checking out, we take the guests to Magyarszombatfa, a famous potter’s village. The clay-bearing land on the border of the village provided excellent raw material for extensive earth-enware manufacture in the 13th-19th centuries. A furnished onetime potter’s house can be viewed in a 19th century peasant building with a thatched roof and plank walls, where the furniture and household articles of traditional peasant life can be admired, as well as the potters’ working tools and the beehive oven.

After the Potter’s House visit the guests just stroll around the region and have some stops at few sights, like the Wooden church of Magyarföld, Skirted Belfry in Pankasz or Lake Vadása at Hegyhátszentjakab, where the guests have free time to have lunch or coffee on their own.

In the afternoon, after the visit, transfer back to Budapest.
