Holocaust Memorial Center

The Holocaust Memorial Center pays tribute to the victims of the Hungarian Holocaust. The complex, inaugurated in 2004, houses a synagogue, a museum and an inner courtyard with a glass memorial wall dedicated to the over 500,000 victims with their names inscribed on the wall. The museum’s permanent exhibition tells the history of the Holocaust through the stories of individuals in an interactive way. Original documents and personal belongings are on display.

Hospital in the rock

You are invited to the sensational touristic attraction of Hungary, the former top-secret Military Hospital and Nuclear Bunker – under the codename of LOSK 0101/1 – beneath the Buda Castle that is now open to the public. Much more than a mere museum or bunker, this exhibition illustrates in the original surroundings the ambiance of the tragic final days of World War II, and later, the chill and naïveté of the early days of the Cold War. To recreate the feeling, the exhibition displays much of the original and contemporary artifacts in dioramas with over 70 wax figures, further bringing to life the sights that one might have seen when the Hospital and shelter were operational.

House of Terror

The House of Terror Museum commemorates the victims of both the Communist and the Nazi regimes in Hungary. The building served as the former headquarter of the ultra-right (Nazi) party in 1940, and its basement was used as a prison. During Communism, the building was taken over by the State Security (Hungarian version of the KGB). Hundreds, or perhaps even thousands, were tortured in the House of Terror. The exhibition is well thought-out, from beginning to end. Some parts may not be clear for visitors, as they have more of a symbolic meaning for Hungarians. It’s difficult to even imagine what it must have been like, but try sitting for a moment in one of the cells with the door closed…

Mememto Park (Statue Park)

Memento Park, a Communist-themed outdoor museum located just outside Budapest, is a reminder of the fall of tyranny. In 1989, when Hungary chose to embrace a free market economy, the new government removed many of the statues and monuments identified with the former Communist regime. Now, these formerly revered relics of an unfulfilled dream stand together, providing unique experience. Anyone with even a remote interest in the country’s history will find the short trip worthwhile.

Aquincum Museum

This museum is named after the ancient city belonging to the Roman Empire. The archeological findings of this settlement are on display here as well as items from the local Mithraeum.

Eger Castle

The Castle of Eger is one of the most determining buildings of the Hungarian history and culture. Hungary’s most famous castle from the Turkish era hosts many interesting exhibitons today. Its towering and imposing walls are impressive and within these we can find memories of cultural history date back to a thousand years ago.

Festetics Palace

The Festetics Palace in Keszthely is the third Hungarian palace in size, while it is the most popular with visitors. It functions as a museum and an events centre. The building is surrounded by a nature reserve park. The sights in the park include trees that are hundreds of years old, colourful flowerbeds, fountains, statues – among them the full-figure bronze statue of George Festetics I –, the garden pond and the fountain decorated with lions.

The Royal Palace of Gödöllő

The Royal Palace of Gödöllő is one of the most important, largest monuments of Hungarian palace architecture. During the reign of Franz Joseph it became the favoured Hungarian residence for the Austro-Hungarian Royal family. The Emperor’s wife, the highly admired Queen Elizabeth, well-known as Sissi, especially loved Gödöllő.

Hollókő

Hollókő, a living museum village, is nestled in a picturesque hilly surrounding about 100 km from Budapest in the North of Hungary. The village has preserved the warm, person-centered, friendly atmosphere of the diminishing village-life of the accelerated XXI century. The ‘Old-village’ with its adjoining 141-hectare Nature Reserve was added to the WHO World Heritage in 1987 for preserving unique values of folk and applied art.

Citadel of Visegrád

Maybe the most emblematic building of Visegrád which is commonly just referred as the castle of Visegrád, and with this emphasizing the cultural value of the respect-demanding complex peaking on the top of the Várhegy. In every year, thousands of visitors goes to the Citadel, the highest sight of Visegrád, which has an extraordinary view on the Danube Bend from its terrace and which hosts many exciting exhibitions – mainly about the Middle Ages.

Esztergom Castle Museum

Esztergom is one of the oldest towns in Hungary. The most important historical buildings here are concentrated in the Castle District. The building of the Royal Castle on Esztergom Castle Hill began in the last third of the 10th century during the reign of Prince Géza. The work begun by Géza was continued by his son, St. István, and the castle became one of the most important royal seats in the first decades of the 11th century.
