Day 1

Arrival to Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport OR if you are already arrived to Budapest, breakfast at your hotel.

In the morning hours departure from Budapest with your local guide and your private transfer to Ópusztaszer. The first stop will be at the Ópusztaszer National Heritage Park, an open-air ethnographic museum, a skanzen and excursion site. Its best-known exhibition is Árpád Feszty’s panorama painting (120-meter-long and 15-meter-high) titled The arrival of the Hungarians in the Rotunda. The Park has 19 building complexes – that represent the different regions of the country – and three open-air exhibitions. The guests can also find here a collection of carts and agricultural machines, yurt houses, horse shows, a Water Exhibition and  there are several monuments in the park, as well as a forest trail, a forest pitch and playgrounds also await discovery.

The second stop in this town will be the Labyrinth of Csillagösvény, the second largest attraction of Ópusztaszer. This program is a great choice for everyone looking for a little relaxation. The labyrinth-themed theme park, unique in Central Europe, is built from natural ingredients and offers a world of mazes, logic puzzles, folk and children’s games from the youngest children to the active elderly. The biggest hedge maze in Europe is made even more exciting by introducing Hungarian history, geography and wildlife in an interesting and playful way.

After leaving Ópusztaszer, proceed towards Szeged, where the guests will have a short free time for an afternoon snack on their own in the city centre.

Day 2

The day starts with discovering the beautiful town of Szeged. The first stop will be at the Szeged Cathedral. The iconic symbol of Szeged, the votive church (also known as the Dóm of Szeged) is the fourth biggest church in the country and was sanctified on 24 October 1930. Its architecture is characterised by the mixture of Roman, gothic and eastern Byzantine style elements. The church and the Dóm Square, which combines the characteristics of a Mediterranean style piazza with the formal brick architecture, is a real communal melting pot and the symbolic centre of a new beginning. It is a cathedral, a family-friendly church, a destination of pilgrims, a sacred space, exclusive conference and concert venue, home of the Szeged Open-Air Festival and an open and receptive community magnet. Outside the Votive Church stands the Saint Demetrius (Dömötör) Tower, the oldest architectural relic of the city. On the first floor of the tower an interactive exhibition area is available where visitors can be acquainted with the history of baptism, and on the second floor the architecture history of the Saint Demetrius Tower is presented by an interactive exhibition. This sight also will be visited during the program. After the visit the guests have free time for a walk or for having lunch on their own in the city centre.

In the afternoon the guests visit the Franciscan Visitor centre in Alsóváros of Szeged. The monastery and the church together form Hungary’s second largest church complex, keeping its original function. Taking a walk inside the church visitors can learn about the history of the medieval building complex, while at the exhibition displaying the centuries-old masterpieces of religious art. In addition, visitors can gain insight into monks’ everyday life, which is still based on the regulation of the founder, St. Francis of Assisi. In the garden of the monastery there is an exhibition of the old stones of the church and a herb garden resembling the farming of the Franciscan friars in Alsóváros. This old monastery farm was the starting point of the paprika production in Szeged in the 16th century, so the garden today can’t be complete without the bright red colour paprika spice either.

Day 3

After checking out from the hotel, the guests will travel to Makó, a nice small town, that is famous for its onion and garlic produce. Makó’s architecture is exceptional: 10 public buildings and a city square were built according to the designs by Imre Makovecz, one of Hungary’s best known architects. The guests can take part on a guided tour through the city centre, that will give them a chance to see the works of this Kossuth Prize-winning architect through the eye of an expert.

After the walk the guests visit (for free of charge) the Treetop Boardwalk in Makó, that gives visitors the unique opportunity to marvel at life in the foliage from up close. Running along the river Maros, the 190-metre boardwalk is dotted with information boards, explaining what you can see. During the day the guests have free time in the town, for having lunch on their own.

In the late afternoon, after the visit, transfer back to Budapest.
